U20 Match Report 11/3/2012

Under 20’s Superleague

Dulwich Hill vs. Mt Druitt 11/3/12

Following a heavy 4-1 defeat at the hands of APIA Leichhardt and a weary, equally tiring 1-1 draw to Marconi Fairfield, being starved of possession in both matches, the 20’s boys were hungry to manipulate the football to their first win of the pre-season going into their trial against Mt Druitt.

In the hot sunny weather, it was essential that the boys hold the ball against their hosts, perhaps more used to the heat than they were, and that they did. Kicking off first, they immediately discovered and employed the passing game they’d been looking for all the pre-season, making the best use of the good, flat Mt Druitt surface. The first half went steadily, the boys manipulating the ball and the Mt Druitt boys at will, remaining patient in possession and lead up play, probing for the good killer ball through, enabling Ahmed Hassan to nicely set Huss up for the opener, a cool finish into the bottom corner on the run. By the end of the first half, the Mt Druitt Rangers were “well cooked” and the Dully boys walked off satisfied and relaxed. “Normie” congratulated the boys on a “flawless” half in the dressing room break, and they returned to the field confidently and proudly.

The next 45 minutes of play tested the lads’ abilities of technique and concentrate under the forces of fatigue. They again found their rhythm after the Rangers gave the ball back shortly after the kick off, and continued to build on their successful 1st half play. Giancarlo Romeo an addition to the 2nd half eleven, quickly slaloming down the right flank, cutting in and clipping the ball into the path of 1st grade stand-in Chris to finish well for the second goal. Chris came close on a number of occasions to grabbing a second but couldn’t quite hit the target.

Wing-backs Luke Vespa and James “Scholesy” Morrison got up the field with power and precision, both surging forward and having opportunities to score themselves, with James notching an assist to centre midfielder Zach Chapman, running the length of the pitch to deliver a pin-point accurate cross to Zach’s finessed inside-of-the-foot volley to the top left corner. Zach himself was a presence the midfield, alongside “number 9” Chris Shelston and defensive mid turned star stopper Matty Hudson, playing box to box for most of the game and providing the buffer needed to sustain Dully’s possession game, as well as providing excellent service for the boys up front.

As the flow of the match remained in control of the Dully boys, and the hard working Jawid Karimi returning to the pitch after suffering a quad injury early in the first half, immense pressure received in the previous two games was non-existent for the centre backs and keeper – Sweeper Fillip Jovoeski felt composed enough to do some ankle breaking of his own in Dully’s half and even moving forward looking to feed attackers, with the support off the ball from the mids and backs being fantastic.

The Rangers sensed a lack of urgency among the Dully ranks later in the half and managed to nick back two goals – one from a defensive lapse and the other a penalty over a confusing handball in the box in the dying moments of the match. Nonetheless the lads remained composed and did what they needed to do to keep their 3 goals untainted – the end result a 3-2 win for Dully at Mount Druitt.
